Detailed Description of 3LPP Coated Steel Pipe

The 3LPP coating system offers a pipeline protection solution based on 3LPE technology tailored for elevated temperature situations and claims the same construction scheme as 3LPE but with the outer layer being polypropylene (PP). PP is ideally suited for high temperature pipeline service because of its excellent mechanical properties and temperature resistance. With that, it is the camera in hot oil or steam pipelines and pipelines crossing high temperature areas (i.e. deserts or geothermal).

    🛡️
Layer 1: Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) Primer

Provides corrosion prevention as well as superb adhesion to steel.

    🔗
    Layer 2: Copolymer Adhesive

The adhesive used to bond the FBE primer to the PP topcoat.

Layer 3: Polypropylene (PP) Top Coat

Corrosion resistant, high temperature resistance, high hardness, high abrasion resistance. Also provides protection against mechanical damage.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q What is 3LPP coated steel pipe and how does it differ from 3LPE?
3LPP (Three-Layer Polypropylene) coated steel pipe uses the same three-layer construction as 3LPE, but replaces the outer polyethylene layer with polypropylene (PP). This makes 3LPP significantly more suitable for high-temperature applications, as PP offers superior heat resistance compared to PE, making it ideal for hot oil, steam, and geothermal pipelines.
Q What are the three layers in a 3LPP coating system?
The three layers are: (1) Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) Primer — for corrosion protection and adhesion to steel; (2) Copolymer Adhesive — which bonds the FBE primer to the outer layer; and (3) Polypropylene (PP) Top Coat — providing mechanical protection, high-temperature resistance, and abrasion resistance.
Q What international standards govern 3LPP coated steel pipes?
3LPP coated steel pipes are manufactured in accordance with internationally recognized standards including ISO 21809-1, DIN 30678, and EN10286. These standards ensure consistent coating quality, performance, and reliability across different project requirements and operating environments.
Q What is the typical coating thickness for 3LPP pipes?
The total coating thickness for 3LPP coated steel pipes typically ranges from 1.8mm to 4.5mm. However, the exact thickness can be customized based on specific project requirements or applicable standards to ensure optimal protection for the intended operating conditions.
Q What are the key mechanical performance indicators of 3LPP coating?
Key mechanical performance indicators include a Shore D Hardness of ≥ 60, a Vicat Softening Point of ≥ 140°C, and a Tensile Strength of ≥ 20 MPa. These values demonstrate the coating's ability to withstand physical stress, elevated temperatures, and demanding operational environments.
Q In which industries and applications is 3LPP coated steel pipe commonly used?
3LPP coated steel pipes are widely used in industries where pipelines are exposed to high temperatures or harsh environments. Common applications include hot oil and steam transmission pipelines, pipelines in desert regions, geothermal energy systems, and subsea or offshore pipelines where both temperature resistance and corrosion protection are critical.
