ASTM A105 is the standard specification for carbon steel forgings used in piping applications, while A105N refers to the same material that has been normalized — a heat treatment process that improves mechanical properties and grain structure for enhanced toughness and consistency.
316L offers superior corrosion resistance in chloride-rich environments and is preferred for marine or chemical applications. 904L provides even greater resistance to sulfuric acid and strong reducing agents, making it suitable for highly aggressive industrial environments where standard 304 would be insufficient.
ASTM A182 F51 (Duplex 2205) and F53 (Super Duplex 2507) are duplex stainless steel grades offering a combination of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. They are widely used in offshore oil & gas, desalination, and chemical processing industries where both mechanical performance and corrosion resistance are critical.
ASTM A182 F91 and F92 are chrome-moly alloy steels designed for high-temperature, high-pressure service. They are commonly used in power generation plants, petrochemical refineries, and steam pipelines where elevated temperature strength and creep resistance are essential.
RF (Raised Face) is the most common flange face type, providing a concentrated seating area for gaskets. FF (Flat Face) is used when mating with flat-faced flanges, typically in lower-pressure applications. RTJ (Ring Type Joint) uses a metal ring gasket seated in a groove, offering a high-integrity seal for high-pressure and high-temperature service.
ASTM A694 grades (F42, F46, F56, F60, F65) are designated by their minimum yield strength in ksi. Selection depends on the operating pressure and pipeline design requirements. Higher grades such as F65 are used in high-pressure transmission pipelines, while lower grades like F42 suit moderate-pressure applications. Always consult relevant pipeline design codes such as ASME B31.4 or B31.8 for proper grade selection.
