China SSAW Spiral Submerged Arc Welded Steel Pipe Suppliers - Factory Direct Large Diameter Pipes

SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) pipe, commonly referred to as HSAW (Helical Submerged Arc Welded) pipe, is manufactured by helically forming a steel strip or plate and then welding the spiral seam through the submerged arc welding technique. This innovative method facilitates the production of large diameter pipes using narrower raw materials, making it a preferred choice in various industries.

    Detailed Description of SSAW Pipe

Spiral Seam Submerged Arc Welded Steel Pipe (SSAW/HSAW) is manufactured through a unique spiral forming process, in which the hot rolled steel strip is first flattened and then spirally coiled at a forming angle of 15-60°, and then internally and externally welded using a double wire submerged arc welding process. This process is capable of producing a 2.5 meter diameter pipe from a 1.2 meter wide steel strip, with a material utilization rate 15-20% higher than that of a straight seam welded pipe, and the spiral weld allows for a more uniform stress distribution. Its excellent cost performance makes it widely used in engineering fields such as oil and gas transportation, submarine pipelines and urban pipeline corridors, especially suitable for long-distance pipeline construction and low-temperature environment.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q What is the difference between SSAW pipe and LSAW pipe?
SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) pipe is formed by spirally coiling a steel strip at an angle of 15–60°, allowing larger diameters to be produced from narrower strips with higher material utilization. LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) pipe has a single straight weld seam and is typically used where higher pressure ratings and stricter dimensional tolerances are required. SSAW pipe is generally more cost-effective for large-diameter, long-distance pipeline applications.
Q What standards does SSAW pipe comply with?
SSAW pipe can be manufactured to a wide range of international standards, including API 5L, ASTM A252, ASTM A333, ASTM A53, EN10217, EN10219, ISO 3183, GB/T9711, GB/T3091, SY/T5037, DIN1626, JIS G3444, and GOST 20295, depending on the intended application and regional requirements.
Q What outer diameter range is available for SSAW pipe?
SSAW pipe is available in outer diameters ranging from 219.1mm (8 inches) up to 3500mm (140 inches). This wide diameter range makes it one of the most versatile options for large-scale infrastructure projects including water transmission, oil and gas pipelines, and piling applications.
Q What surface treatment options are available for SSAW pipe?
SSAW pipe can be supplied with various surface treatments to meet different environmental and operational requirements, including bare (untreated), black painting, varnish, anti-rust oil, 3PE (three-layer polyethylene), FBE (fusion bonded epoxy), epoxy coating, and bitumen coating. The appropriate coating is selected based on the corrosion protection level needed for the specific application.
Q Is SSAW pipe suitable for low-temperature environments?
Yes. SSAW pipe can be manufactured using low-temperature steel grades such as ASTM A333 (GR.1–10) and certain API 5L PSL2 grades, which are specifically designed to maintain toughness and ductility at sub-zero temperatures. This makes SSAW pipe suitable for pipelines in cold regions and cryogenic service conditions.
Q What inspections and tests are performed on SSAW pipe before delivery?
SSAW pipe undergoes a comprehensive quality control process prior to shipment, including chemical composition analysis, mechanical property testing (tensile, yield, impact), hydrostatic pressure testing, non-destructive testing (ultrasonic testing UT, radiographic testing RT, magnetic particle testing MT), dimensional inspection, and weld seam inspection to ensure full compliance with the specified standard and customer requirements.
