China SSAW Steel Pipe Suppliers - High-Quality HSAW Pipe from Reliable Factory

SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) pipes, also referred to as HSAW (Helical Submerged Arc Welded) pipes, are manufactured by helically shaping a steel strip or plate, followed by welding the spiral seam through the submerged arc welding process. This advanced technique enables the production of large diameter pipes from narrower raw materials, making it a preferred choice for various industrial applications.

    Detailed Description of SSAW Pipe

Spiral Seam Submerged Arc Welded Steel Pipe (SSAW/HSAW) is manufactured through a unique spiral forming process, in which the hot rolled steel strip is first flattened and then spirally coiled at a forming angle of 15-60°, and then internally and externally welded using a double wire submerged arc welding process.

This process is capable of producing a 2.5 meter diameter pipe from a 1.2 meter wide steel strip, with a material utilization rate 15-20% higher than that of a straight seam welded pipe, and the spiral weld allows for a more uniform stress distribution. Its excellent cost performance makes it widely used in engineering fields such as oil and gas transportation, submarine pipelines and urban pipeline corridors, especially suitable for long-distance pipeline construction and low-temperature environment.

    • Forming angle of 15–60° spiral coiling process
    • Double wire submerged arc welding (internal & external)
    • 15–20% higher material utilization vs. straight seam pipe
    • Ideal for oil & gas, submarine & long-distance pipelines

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q What is SSAW pipe and how is it manufactured?
SSAW (Spiral Seam Submerged Arc Welded) pipe is produced by spirally coiling hot-rolled steel strip at a forming angle of 15–60° and then welding the seam both internally and externally using a double wire submerged arc welding process. This method allows large-diameter pipes to be produced from narrower steel strips, offering high efficiency and uniform stress distribution.
Q What outer diameter range is available for SSAW pipe?
SSAW pipes are available in outer diameters ranging from 219.1mm to 3500mm (8 inches to 140 inches), making them suitable for a wide range of pipeline projects, from medium-scale urban infrastructure to large-diameter transmission lines.
Q Which international standards does SSAW pipe comply with?
SSAW pipe can be manufactured to comply with a wide range of international standards, including API 5L, ASTM A252, ASTM A333, ASTM A53, EN10217, EN10219, ISO 3183, JIS G3444, GOST 20295, GB/T9711, GB/T3091, SY/T5037, and DIN1626, among others. This broad compliance ensures suitability for global projects.
Q What surface treatment options are available for SSAW pipe?
SSAW pipes can be supplied with various surface treatments to suit different environmental conditions, including bare, black painting, varnish, anti-rust oil, 3PE coating, FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy) coating, epoxy coating, and bitumen coating. The appropriate treatment depends on the application environment and project specifications.
Q What are the main advantages of SSAW pipe over straight seam welded pipe?
SSAW pipe offers several key advantages over straight seam welded (LSAW) pipe: it achieves a material utilization rate 15–20% higher due to the spiral forming process; it can produce large-diameter pipes from narrower steel strips; and the spiral weld geometry provides more uniform stress distribution, which is particularly beneficial for high-pressure and long-distance pipeline applications.
Q What quality inspections are performed on SSAW pipe?
SSAW pipes undergo a comprehensive series of quality inspections to ensure compliance with specified standards. These include chemical analysis, mechanical testing, hydrostatic pressure testing, non-destructive testing (NDT) such as ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), and magnetic particle testing (MT), as well as dimensional inspection and weld inspection.
